Prime Minister Karki Urges Nepali Ambassadors to Enhance Voting Rights and Governance
Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who also oversees the foreign ministry, has addressed Nepali ambassadors stationed abroad, urging them to explore the possibility of granting voting rights to Nepali citizens living, staying, and working overseas. This was part of her first virtual interaction with the diplomats, during which she issued a five-point directive.
Karki emphasized the importance of maintaining free, fair, and fear-free elections as the foundation of democracy. She mentioned that the general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026, are crucial for Nepal’s democratic future. The government is committed to ensuring these elections are conducted effectively, and she urged the ambassadors to communicate the priorities of the government in Kathmandu.
She also highlighted ongoing studies on the feasibility of allowing temporary residents abroad to vote. “We expect you to collect information and provide recommendations on how this could be practically implemented,” Karki stated. The Ministry of Home Affairs is currently working on several technical aspects, including identifying Nepali citizens without permanent residency, ensuring voting rights outside embassy premises, and managing law and order during voting.
Focus on Good Governance and International Collaboration
Karki stressed the need for coordination between embassies and international institutions to ensure smooth election processes. She also mentioned that if specific assistance is required from friendly nations, the embassies will be informed promptly. Additionally, the Election Commission has started preparations to bring in international observers, aligning with global practices.
The prime minister noted that the current government faces both opportunities and challenges. She emphasized the responsibility of steering the country toward democracy and inclusive prosperity while addressing these challenges. She also reiterated the government’s commitment to holding the upcoming elections on schedule and meeting the expectations of the Gen Z generation, which demands accountability, good governance, transparency, and efficient public services.
Foreign Policy and Economic Diplomacy
On foreign policy, Karki highlighted the goodwill of neighboring countries like India and China, as well as development partners. She assured the embassies that the interim government would successfully complete its mandate. She also called for sensitivity towards the rights and welfare of Nepalis working in the Gulf countries and Malaysia, emphasizing the need for efficient service delivery and long-term employment opportunities in Nepal.
Karki mentioned the significance of the Gen Z movement, which relates to political, economic, and broader governance reforms. She described it as a historic opportunity to fulfill these demands. The core goals of the interim government include strengthening good governance and conducting successful elections.
Addressing Challenges and Promoting Tourism
Karki urged ambassadors to inform relevant stakeholders about the recent movement in Nepal, people’s aspirations for change, and the government’s priorities. She also highlighted the establishment of the “Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund” to support relief, rebuilding, and economic revival. Embassies were instructed to publicize and promote this initiative.
Tourism, which has suffered due to the Gen-Z movement, was another focus area. Karki noted that hotel bookings in October, a peak tourist month, are at only 30 percent. She urged ambassadors to inform all parties that the situation in Nepal has normalized, and tourism, trade, and investment have resumed as before.
Supporting Nepali Workers Abroad
Karki expressed concern over the plight of Nepali citizens working abroad, many of whom face challenges such as imprisonment and loss of life. She emphasized the need for effective services and protection from exploitation by middlemen. The Ministry is coordinating on issues like the misuse of visit visas, and embassies are expected to provide concrete suggestions.
Global Trends and Development Opportunities
Looking at the global landscape, Karki pointed out a mix of political and economic instability alongside emerging opportunities in sustainable development, climate justice, and inclusive technology. She stressed the importance of effective and proactive diplomacy centered on national interest.
Nepal’s preparation to graduate from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category was also discussed. Karki emphasized the need to strengthen partnerships with friendly nations and multilateral organizations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Climate Resilience and Soft Power
Karki urged ambassadors to engage in international dialogues on climate finance, technology, and resources, always prioritizing Nepal’s national interest. She also emphasized the importance of economic diplomacy and public diplomacy to enhance Nepal’s global image through soft power and cultural identity.
In conclusion, Karki called on the embassies to place service to the nation and people at the center of their work, operating with a stronger sense of responsibility and dedication. She highlighted the critical role of diplomats in the national endeavor.
Forty-four Nepali diplomats, including permanent representatives and consuls general, participated in the briefings.
