A Major Upgrade for Puchong Jaya Morning Market
After more than three decades of operation, the Puchong Jaya morning market located on Jalan Merak 2A in Bandar Puchong Jaya, Selangor, is undergoing a significant transformation. This upgrade aims to enhance the overall experience for both traders and customers.
The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has allocated RM600,000 for the renovation project, which includes several key improvements. One of the main components of the project is the installation of durable, anti-slip interlocking pavement slabs. Additionally, damaged roads and drains will be repaired to ensure better infrastructure.
The project officially started on June 16 and is expected to be completed by October 19. It will directly benefit 127 stallowners who operate within the market. The state executive councillor and Kinrara assemblyman, Ng Sze Han, expressed hope that this upgrade would set a new standard for future market developments.
“The market has been operating since 1992, and this is its most significant upgrade to date,” said Sze Han. “It’s also a win-win situation because reorganizing the stalls into more suitable locations not only improves traffic flow but should also increase footfall.”
One of the key changes in the renovation involves relocating the chicken and fish stalls to a newly paved section. This move is intended to improve the overall cleanliness and comfort of the market environment.
“Market facilities must evolve with the times; they need to focus on cleanliness and comfort to attract younger generations,” Sze Han stated during a press conference following a site visit with MBSJ councillor Ng Seow Chen and MBSJ Engineering Department director Dr Mohd Ariffuddin Kamari.
During the visit, Sze Han highlighted that issues such as blocked drains and poor hygiene had been longstanding problems that were difficult to resolve. He emphasized the importance of community and trader cooperation in addressing these challenges.
Seow Chen echoed this sentiment, urging local traders to take responsibility for maintaining the area’s cleanliness. She warned against throwing rubbish or used cooking oil into the drains, as this could lead to blockages.
She hopes that the upgrades will lead to an overall improvement in the market. However, she stressed that environmental hygiene requires the collective effort of everyone involved.
“The city council will adopt a strict approach to monitoring environmental hygiene and will take action against any traders who violate the rules,” she added.
In addition to its role as a marketplace, the site also functions as a public carpark after the market closes at noon. This dual-purpose use highlights the significance of the location within the community.
