Rangers to Engage Steven Gerrard in Managerial Talks
Rangers are set to engage in discussions with Steven Gerrard over the next 48 hours, with the possibility of him returning as the club’s new manager. Gerrard is currently seen as the leading candidate for the role, and he has previously acknowledged that he has ‘unfinished business’ in management.
A delegation from Rangers, including key figures Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, will meet in London on Thursday to lead the recruitment process. This meeting will focus on opening talks with Gerrard and his representatives regarding a potential return to the club where he was in charge between 2018 and 2021 before moving to Aston Villa.
Despite the positive signs, the situation is not yet finalized. Gerrard is expected to seek clarity on the internal structure of the club and the chain of command. It is reported that he would have no issues working alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell, but he would insist on having the final say and full authority over all transfer dealings.

Gerrard also needs to be convinced that Rangers is the right environment for him as he aims to revive his managerial career. Earlier this year, he had initial discussions with Rangers before the appointment of Russell Martin, but he expressed hesitation about uprooting his family from their life in Bahrain.
Although he still needs to resolve personal matters and decide whether he is interested in returning to Glasgow, Gerrard is open to discussing a potential return with his former employers. Sources have also mentioned Slaven Bilic as another possible candidate, but Rangers is reportedly looking for a younger manager.
Gerrard is currently in a strong position, but club sources emphasize that he is not the only name being considered at this stage. Earlier this week, Gerrard hinted at a possible return to Ibrox when he spoke to his former England teammate Rio Ferdinand on a podcast.
Ferdinand believes it would not be surprising if Gerrard ended up managing the club where he won a Scottish league title in 2021. Speaking to talkSPORT, he said:
“I have to say when I interviewed him, he left me in no uncertain terms that he wants to be a manager and he’s got full confidence in doing that. He’s itching to get back in now. He never said this to me, but I personally think just the energy that I felt in that room, that if Rangers came calling he’d go or at least have that conversation. What I felt, if I was an owner of a football club and Steven Gerrard was sat in front of me and I felt that energy in the room when I was interviewing him, he’s getting the job. Forget what’s gone on before, but also his time before at Rangers, he did great there. I’ve never had so many Rangers fans flood the comments of my social media or the podcast. They’re all desperate for him to go up and at least have the conversation, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Steven Gerrard is managing again very soon and Rangers would be probably one of my big bets.”
Potential Return and Fan Reactions
The prospect of Gerrard’s return has generated significant excitement among Rangers fans. Many believe that his experience and leadership could bring a new era of success to the club. His previous tenure at Rangers was marked by notable achievements, including the Scottish league title in 2021, which remains a highlight of his managerial career.
As the search for a new manager intensifies, the possibility of Gerrard making a dramatic return continues to capture the imagination of fans and analysts alike. With his track record and the strong support from the fanbase, the chances of a successful return seem increasingly likely.
