Justin Woodward, a celebrated chef known for his innovative approach to fine dining, passed away at the age of 43 due to liver failure. His journey through the culinary world was marked by creativity, dedication, and an unwavering passion for food.

Woodward, who had been sober for three weeks, was just seven days away from receiving a liver transplant when he suffered a fatal internal bleed. The Boston-born chef used food as a means to express his love and take pride in the dishes he created. His family emphasized how his culinary creations were not just meals but expressions of his heart and soul.

Staff members at his Portland-area restaurant Ok Omens paid tribute to Woodward on Instagram, acknowledging his loyalty, creativity, and commitment to mentoring young chefs. They noted that his legacy lives on through the work of those he guided, who continue to push the boundaries of fine dining across the country.

Woodward spent nearly 15 years leading the kitchens at Ok Omens and Castagna, where he played a pivotal role in defining the identities of both restaurants. His influence extended beyond the kitchen, as he inspired many within the culinary community.

Woodward studied culinary arts at the Art Institute of San Diego and trained in kitchens across New York and Europe. During his time in San Diego, he met Michelin-starred chef Matt Lightner while working at L’Auberge Del Mar restaurant. This connection led him to move to Portland, where he served as Lightner’s sous chef at Castagna and later took over as the restaurant’s executive chef.

Under his leadership, Castagna gained a reputation as the city’s most forward-thinking restaurant. Woodward showcased his talents through 20-course menus featuring challenging dishes. His talent did not go unnoticed, as he earned a nomination for the James Beard Foundation’s Rising Star Chef award in 2013 and was nominated as Best Chef Northwest for four consecutive years starting in 2015.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Castagna closed, prompting Woodward to shift his focus to Ok Omens. The restaurant received James Beard nominations for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages in recent years, further cementing its reputation in the culinary world.

Woodward was known for his dedication to helping others, using his food and kitchen skills to bring joy to people, especially in their times of need. His older sister, Rachel Ruiz, recalled how if someone mentioned a recipe they liked, he would often show up at their front door to deliver it.

Although he loved showcasing his talents in the kitchen, Woodward also had a deep appreciation for nature, hiking, and mountain biking. His obituary highlighted his love for traveling and experiencing new places through native art and cuisine.

However, his passions did not shield him from personal struggles. His older sister, Rachel Ruiz, shared that her brother struggled with alcohol issues in the industry. She urged people struggling with alcoholism to seek help, emphasizing the seriousness of the disease and the damage it can do to the body.

The family hopes that Woodward’s unfortunate and sudden passing and their transparency about his disease will inspire others to seek help when needed.
