Community Outraged Over Inflatable Dome in Stonehaven
Residents of Stonehaven, Scotland, are expressing their frustration over a 29ft inflatable dome that has significantly impacted the scenic views of their seaside town. The structure, which was erected to cover neighboring tennis courts, has caused discontent among caravan owners who describe the area as a “lovely” holiday haven.
Bob Cowie, a 79-year-old pensioner from Aberdeen, shared his concerns about the dome blocking the view from his window. He mentioned that he and other residents were initially informed that the dome would be installed after the caravan season ended, when they wouldn’t be present. However, the structure was put up while they were still in the area, and workers have been seen walking through the site.
Cowie likened the situation to having a lorry parked outside his door, obstructing sunlight and causing distress. His sentiment is echoed by many others in the community who feel that the dome has ruined the peaceful environment they cherish.
The imposing dome, valued between £250,000 and £500,000, was constructed by the Stonehaven Tennis Club for its 360 members. It covers two acrylic courts, allowing players to enjoy tennis regardless of weather conditions.
Aberdeenshire Council granted planning permission to the club in 2023, with the understanding that the dome would not be erected until the last Friday in September and could only remain until April of the following year. The club has adhered to these guidelines, as the caravan site closes for the season on Halloween.
Peter Brown, operations director for Covair Structures, which was responsible for the construction of the dome, emphasized that the facility is world-class. He stated that the dome is designed to withstand winds of up to 120mph and is fully heated for winter use. Brown believes that this facility will provide the community in Stonehaven with an opportunity to advance in the sport of tennis.
He envisioned a scenario where young people could play tennis on the beach in February, highlighting the potential benefits of such a facility.
