Selena Gomez Shares Taylor Swift’s Life-Changing Advice

Selena Gomez recently opened up about a piece of advice from her long-time friend, Taylor Swift, that has stayed with her throughout their 17-year friendship. At the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, DC, the 32-year-old star shared a powerful quote from the 35-year-old pop icon: “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”

This statement has deeply influenced Selena, who emphasized the importance of surrounding herself with incredible people. “You just have to learn and not be afraid of all the things that you might lose out on,” she explained. She praised Taylor as “one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met” and highlighted her strength and consistent guidance.

Gomez also reflected on their enduring friendship, noting that “I’m not sure what I would say I’ve done for her other than been there as a friend.”

A Friendship Rooted in Support

The two celebrities, affectionately known as ‘Taylena,’ first met in 2008 when they were both dating members of the Jonas Brothers. Their bond has only grown stronger over the years, especially during significant life moments.

Taylor was by Selena’s side when she married Grammy-nominated music producer Benny Blanco at a reported $4 million ceremony held at the Sea Crest Nursery in Santa Barbara, CA on September 27. Selena, who has 677.9 million social media followers, shared a heartfelt Instagram post on October 6, captioning it: “In honor of [your new album Life of a] Showgirl… blessed to have you by my side almost 20 years later gator! I love you!”

Insiders revealed that Taylor gave an emotional wedding toast, expressing how much she supports Selena. She spoke about how Selena found happiness after embracing her true self and focusing on being who she is. Taylor described the couple as “the perfect pair” and said she had never seen Selena so happy.

A Lighthearted Moment

During the reception, Taylor humorously noted that Selena beat her to the altar but added that both friends have found the loves of their lives. This came ahead of her own upcoming wedding to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Career Highlights and Future Projects

Selena is currently working on her role as artist Mabel Mora in the fifth season of Steve Martin and John Hoffman’s comedy series Only Murders in the Building, which airs Tuesdays on Hulu. She, along with Martin Short and Steve, reportedly earns well over $600K per episode for their work on the critically-acclaimed show.

The Rare Beauty founder has also been preparing for a major role in David O. Russell’s untitled biopic about 11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt. Selena, who is executive producing the film, has been shedding weight for the part. She previously told The Hollywood Reporter last November that the project is still in progress but emphasized her admiration for Ronstadt’s unique perspective on music and life.

“I just found her to be so compelling,” Selena said. “She never really needed to be as successful, and she was willing to try different things. But there’s a reason it’s taking time. We want to make sure it’s going to be good.”
