Strategic Importance of the Seme-Krake Border in Intra-African Trade

The Seme-Krake Border, a vital trade route between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, has been highlighted as a crucial component of intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This border serves as a major land crossing point in the West African subregion, facilitating significant volumes of cross-border trade, human movement, and economic activity.

During a joint border management stakeholders engagement, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the Seme Area Command, Wale Adenuga, emphasized the strategic importance of the Seme-Krake Border. The meeting, which was the second in a series of strategic engagements, brought together representatives from various sectors, including the Chargé d’affaires of the Nigeria Embassy to the Republic of Benin, top security chiefs, and women from both countries.

Adenuga stated that the purpose of the meeting was to promote trade facilitation and strengthen relationships between the two nations. He noted that the Seme-Krake Border plays a critical role in intra-African trade under the AfCFTA, which aims to boost trade by reducing tariffs, improving customs procedures, and promoting the free movement of goods and people across African countries.

Challenges and Initiatives for Smooth Trade

Despite its significance, the Seme-Krake Border has faced challenges such as corruption, extortion by some border officials, bureaucratic delays, and inefficiencies in customs processing. To address these issues and ensure smooth, lawful, and mutually beneficial trade, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under the leadership of Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, has tasked regional customs commands with identifying and removing trade barriers.

According to Adenuga, the meeting was in pursuance of a mandate given by Adeniyi to eradicate all impediments to the free flow of trade in line with extant laws and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols of free movement of goods and persons.

He also highlighted the historical, cultural, and trade relationships between Nigeria and Benin, which date back to the pre-independence era. These connections make the Seme-Krake Border an essential hub for economic benefits for citizens and traders from both countries.

Measures to Enhance Trade Efficiency

Adenuga warned that any officer or non-government official caught frustrating the free movement of persons and goods that have met all formal conditions will be arrested and prosecuted. He urged all travellers and traders to bring their complaints directly to him or contact the Public Relations Officer for immediate action.

To streamline the importation process into Nigeria from Benin, Adenuga announced that truck examinations will be conducted at the designated examination bay. He also promised to look into issues such as the timely removal of truck trackers for quicker movement, reducing unnecessary checkpoints, preventing corruption, and continually promoting dialogue as a means to effective trade.

He reiterated that the border should be used as a transit area and not as a parking zone or storage point to avoid congestion.

Collaboration Between Nigerian and Beninese Customs

Lt Col Arnaud Midgrokan, Head of Benin Customs at the Krake Border and Co-Chair of the Joint Border Post (JBP), expressed appreciation for the meeting and optimism that it would open avenues for solutions to identified challenges. He pledged cooperation and regular collaboration with his Nigerian counterpart to promote lawful commercial activities and ensure zero compromise on joint agreements between the two countries.

Conclusion

The Seme-Krake Border remains a key player in enhancing trade between Nigeria and Benin, and its efficient operation is essential for the success of the AfCFTA. Through collaborative efforts, addressing challenges, and implementing effective measures, both nations can ensure that this strategic border continues to support economic growth and regional integration.
