Taylor Swift Shatters Streaming Records with New Album

Taylor Swift has made headlines once again by breaking Adele’s streaming record with her latest album, The Life Of A Showgirl. The album sold an impressive 3.5 million copies in its first week, surpassing Adele’s previous record of 3.378 million copies for her album 25 in 2015.

Fans were hoping to see Taylor top the charts on Apple Music for both the album and single. According to reports, The Life Of A Showgirl sold 3.2 million physical and digital copies, along with 300,000 from equivalent album units in streaming, totaling 3.5 million. Meanwhile, Adele’s 25 had 3.482 million equivalent units, with 3.378 million being traditional sales and the rest from streaming.

A record number of 5 million fans pre-saved The Life Of A Showgirl on Spotify, and a special vinyl edition sold out within an hour of its release online.

Despite polarized critical reactions, Taylor has embraced the “chaos” surrounding the album. In an interview with The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music, she said:

“I welcome the chaos, seeing that it’s a rule of show business. If it’s the first week of my album release and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping.

And art, I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art. I’m not the art police. It’s like everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want. And what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror.”

She also discussed how her music reflects her personal experiences. “Oftentimes, an album is a really, really wild way to look at yourself. What you’re going through in your life is going to affect whether you relate to the music that I’m putting out at any given moment.”

Taylor reassured her fans that she is committed to the music industry long-term. “We’re doing this thing for keeps. I have such an eye on legacy when I’m making my music.” She added, “I know what I made. I know I adore it, and I know that on the theme of what the Showgirl is, all of this is part of it.”

Earlier this week, fans were already planning to dethrone Adele’s streaming dominance ahead of the album’s release. Swifties aimed to break the record for number one on Apple Music for both the album and single. Adele currently holds the record for the most number one songs on Apple Music Songs, with Easy On Me reaching the top in 121 countries.

All 12 tracks from The Life Of A Showgirl are currently in Apple Music’s top 12. A fan account shared:

“We will organize ourselves this time to break the record for #1s on Apple Music for album and single.

The Fate of Ophelia will need 122 #1s on Apple Music to break the platform’s record. The Life of a Showgirl will need 143 #1s on Apple Music Albums.

We’ll only have one version of each according to Taylor, so it’ll be 10x easier than other times.”
