A Disturbing Incident Involving a Newly Elected Mayor

A shocking incident has unfolded in Herdecke, western Germany, where a newly elected mayor was found with multiple stab wounds at her home. The victim, Iris Stalzer, was reportedly attacked by her teenage daughter, according to investigators.

Stalzer, who was elected as the mayor of Herdecke on 28 September, suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident that occurred on Tuesday. However, authorities later confirmed that her condition had stabilized and she was no longer in immediate danger.

Emergency services were called shortly after midday when Stalzer’s 17-year-old daughter reported that her mother had been seriously injured outside the house. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered Stalzer seated in a chair with several stab wounds. They determined that the attack likely took place indoors.

At the crime scene, investigators found two knives and clothing that they believe were used in the attack. As a result, Stalzer’s daughter and her 15-year-old son were detained. During questioning on Tuesday evening, Stalzer pointed to her daughter as the suspect, according to police investigator Jens Rautenberg.

Despite the severity of the incident, there is currently no clear information about the nature of the family conflict that led to the stabbing. Rautenberg declined to comment on a possible motive during a news conference in Hagen, stating that the matter is still under investigation.

Prosecutor Bernd Haldorn described the case as one of bodily harm and mentioned that both the police and prosecutors intend to release the children and hand them over to the youth welfare office. This office will then decide on further measures while the investigation continues.

The attack on Stalzer, which comes in the wake of violence against other local German lawmakers in recent years, has drawn swift condemnation from Chancellor Friedrich Merz and others. However, investigators have determined that there is no indication of a political motive behind the incident.

This incident has raised concerns about domestic violence in the area. According to the regional public broadcaster WDR, police had been called to Stalzer’s house on several occasions in the past due to reports of domestic violence. Additionally, Spiegel news magazine reported an incident this summer involving Stalzer’s daughter attacking her with a knife.

Stalzer is set to take office on 1 November. She is a member of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is the junior party in Germany’s conservative-led national government. Herdecke is a town of approximately 23,000 people located in western Germany’s Ruhr region, between Hagen and Dortmund.
