A Unified Voice for Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR – The spirit of solidarity for Palestine continues to shine brightly in Malaysia as thousands of people from various backgrounds gathered at the “Himpunan Solidariti Bersama Gaza: Gelombang Malaysia, Palestin Merdeka” event held at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil. The event began today with a strong turnout, showcasing the nation’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
From as early as 5pm, a large crowd dressed in white filled the venue. The white attire symbolizes peace and unity, while attendees waved Palestinian flags and carried banners with powerful messages such as “Don’t stop talking about Palestine.” This display reflects a deep commitment to raising awareness about the ongoing struggles faced by the Palestinian people.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who serves as the patron of Sumud Nusantara, is set to arrive around 9pm to deliver the keynote speech. Before his address, a memorandum from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) will be presented, representing the voices of people from across the globe.
Several Malaysian activists who participated in the GSF voyage are also expected to share their experiences at the gathering. These include Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri Kamaruzaman, the CEO of Cinta Gaza Malaysia, as well as celebrities Ardell Aryana, Heliza Helmi, and Zizi Kirana. Their stories add a personal touch to the event, highlighting the real-life impact of the conflict on individuals and communities.
In addition to the speeches, the event featured a special prayer session (solat hajat and munajat perdana) for Gaza following Maghrib. This spiritual component underscores the importance of faith and hope in the face of adversity. There was also a poetry recitation by media personality Ahmad Fedtri Yahya and a performance by Munsyid Malaysia, which added a cultural dimension to the gathering.
Voices from the Crowd
Attendees interviewed by Bernama shared their thoughts on the significance of the event and their personal connection to the Palestinian cause. Siti Masruhah Dahli, a 22-year-old student from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), attended the gathering with a 30-member delegation. She expressed her hope that the event would inspire greater empathy and understanding among Malaysians regarding the plight of Palestinians.
Mohd Kamal Hashim, a 55-year-old civil servant, emphasized his support for the people of Palestine and the volunteers of the GSF mission. “Tonight, we want to show the world that we are united for Palestine, Insya-Allah,” he said. He was accompanied by 40 of his colleagues, demonstrating a collective effort to stand in solidarity.
For Nazmil Mohamad, a 21-year-old student from India, joining the rally was more than just showing up; it was a stand for humanity. He was inspired to attend after listening to Anwar’s speeches on the Palestinian cause. Nazmil, who hails from Kerala, southern India, had previously attended similar gatherings in his home country and felt compelled to lend his voice again.
“I think a lot of people don’t realize there’s a genocide happening. They are trying to normalize it, there’s no humanity at all,” he said, adding that he hopes more people will speak up for Palestine.
The Ongoing Crisis in Gaza
Since October 2023, Israel’s military assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 67,000 Palestinians, with the majority being women, children, and civilians. The bombardment has also destroyed much of the enclave’s infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
Currently, about 2.1 million Gaza residents are facing severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical care. Most residential areas and public buildings have been destroyed by the Israeli regime, leaving many without basic necessities.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, and the international community continues to call for urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis. Events like the “Himpunan Solidariti Bersama Gaza” play a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering global solidarity for the Palestinian cause.
