Emotional Comeback of Tom Lockyer
Tom Lockyer has made a remarkable return to football, marking a significant milestone in his career. After suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a Premier League match 22 months ago, the 30-year-old defender has now reappeared in the starting lineup for Bristol Rovers. His emotional comeback was celebrated by fans and teammates alike at Broadfield Stadium, where he received a warm reception as he played against Crawley Town.
Lockyer, who previously captained Luton Town, faced a life-threatening situation when he collapsed during an away game against Bournemouth on December 16, 2023. The incident left him with a heart stoppage lasting two minutes and 41 seconds, which he described as ‘literally dying.’ Following this harrowing experience, Lockyer underwent critical medical intervention that saved his life.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future in football, Lockyer has continued his journey through rehabilitation. He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to manage his abnormal heart rhythm. This device plays a crucial role in regulating his heart’s function and ensuring his safety on the field.
After being released by Luton in the summer, Lockyer joined Bristol Rovers as a free agent, returning to the club where he began his professional career. He made over 250 appearances for the team earlier in his career, making this move a homecoming of sorts. Just two days after finalizing his return, Lockyer was thrown into the starting XI for a League Two clash against Crawley Town.
‘It feels really, really good to once again be a Bristol Rovers player,’ Lockyer shared. He emphasized the importance of focusing on training and not getting too excited about the possibilities. However, when he learned that the head coach, Darrell Clarke, wanted to secure his return, it became an easy decision for him to come back home.
‘This is everything I’ve worked so hard for over the last two years. Hopefully, I can have many more good memories in a football shirt. I wouldn’t be doing this otherwise. I’m doing this because I love playing football and I’ve got that massive desire to play again, and what better place to do that than back home at Bristol Rovers.’
The match between Bournemouth and Luton was abandoned due to Lockyer’s cardiac arrest. The incident had a profound impact on everyone involved, including former Luton manager Rob Edwards, who rushed onto the pitch immediately after Lockyer collapsed. Both teams were visibly distressed as paramedics and medical staff attended to the player.
Lockyer’s return comes after a challenging recovery period. He was initially set to return to Luton’s Under-21 side last December but faced setbacks due to an ankle ligament injury that required multiple operations. Despite these challenges, Lockyer has remained focused on his goals.
In March last year, Lockyer became a father, three months after his cardiac arrest. This new chapter in his life has given him a fresh perspective. ‘I’m so lucky to still be here and in her life,’ he said. ‘When I hold her now, it’s just amazing. The feeling and love you have for your child is incredibly strong, and mine is even stronger now. I am just so thankful I am here to see her grow, see her change, smile, and you know, be sick on me. I just love it. I am incredibly fortunate. I can’t stress that enough.’
