The Shift to Electronic Gaming in Las Vegas

The Golden Gate Casino in Las Vegas has made a bold move by transitioning its entire gaming floor to electronic games, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions among tourists and industry observers. This change is part of the casino’s broader strategy called ‘The Night Starts Here,’ which aims to modernize the experience and attract a new generation of gamblers, particularly Gen-Z.

The initiative was first introduced during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic but only recently gained significant attention. According to Derek Stevens, the owner and CEO of Circa, the shift has exceeded expectations, with revenue doubling what was initially projected. “It’s about double what our projections were, so we feel pretty happy about it,” Stevens shared with KSVN.

This move is part of a larger effort within the casino industry to revitalize Las Vegas, which has faced challenges in attracting visitors in recent months. However, not everyone is pleased with the change. Michigan couple Cory and Victoria Burk expressed their disappointment, noting that many casinos have already gone digital. “I don’t know how I feel about that,” Burk said, adding that there are now many casinos where everything is digital.

Social media users have also voiced their concerns, with some vowing never to return to the Golden Gate. One user wrote, “And will never go there again… We used to love our High Limit dealers. Never again.” Another commented, “In other words, Casino fires dealers and replaces them with slot machines. In a bid to save a few bucks.” Many others lamented the loss of the traditional Las Vegas experience, stating that the new technology feels dull and unexciting.

However, not all visitors are opposed to the change. Christian and Rosie Henehan from Florida expressed a more positive outlook. “We do miss the old, but we kind of welcome the new,” Christian said. Rosie added, “Making it a little more modern has definitely opened [it] up for the younger generation.”

Stevens emphasized that while the dealers have been replaced on the gaming floor, they will have opportunities to transition into other roles within the Circa family or at other hotels. The campaign is specifically targeting the 86 million Gen-Zers who are familiar with virtual games from a young age.

Although electronic table games have been around for decades, the Golden Gate is the first hotel in downtown Las Vegas to completely eliminate human dealers from all tables. Stevens stated, “We’ve always embraced the future, and now we’re reimagining our casino floor with a high-energy electronic table games pit unlike anything downtown has seen.”

According to a recent study by Market Statsville Group, the electronic table games market in the US is expected to grow from $2.7 billion in 2024 to $4.9 billion by 2033. Proponents of the technology argue that these games offer increased accuracy, efficiency, and cost savings, as they require fewer staff compared to live dealers.

Additionally, electronic games are seen as more accessible due to lower minimum bets and user-friendly interfaces. Players often find the electronic interface less intimidating, offering more privacy and the ability to switch between games easily.

There are three main ways electronic table games can operate: dealer-controlled, non-dealer controlled, or stadium gaming. In a dealer-controlled game, a human facilitates the game while players interact through individual terminals. Non-dealer controlled games are fully automated, with outcomes determined by a random number generator. Stadium gaming involves displaying a live dealer or automated game on a large screen, allowing multiple players to participate from their terminals.

As the gambling industry continues to evolve, the rise of electronic games signals a significant shift in how people engage with casino entertainment. While some mourn the loss of traditional elements, others see the potential for a more modern and inclusive gaming experience. Whether this change marks the end of an era or the beginning of a new chapter remains to be seen.
