New Deal to Reduce Fertility Treatment Costs
President Donald Trump has announced a significant agreement aimed at drastically lowering the cost of fertility treatments for millions of Americans. During a press conference, the president highlighted that the administration has reached an agreement with Merck-owned EMD Serono, a leading producer of fertility drugs, to reduce the price of its medications.
The president stated, “This will dramatically slash the cost of fertility drugs for countless millions of Americans.” He added, “This will make all fertility care far more affordable and accessible and, by providing coverage every step of the way, it will reduce the number of people ultimately needing in-vitro fertilization (IVF).”
“The result will be healthier pregnancies, healthier babies and, overall, a lot more American children,” he concluded.
Expansion of Cost-Saving Measures
This initiative follows recent agreements with major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and AstraZeneca, over the past month to lower costs for consumers. Under these deals, both manufacturers will now sell their drugs to Medicaid, the health insurance program for lower-income Americans, at the same price as in Europe. Additionally, they will offer their drugs at ‘most favoured nation’ prices on a direct-to-consumer federal website called TrumpRx.
In exchange, both companies have been promised a three-year reprieve from tariffs. This comes after the president threatened to impose a tariff of up to 15 percent on brand-name drugs from the European Union and 100 percent from other parts of the world.
Impact on Fertility Treatments
Approximately 10 million women in the US struggle to conceive, with the average cost for IVF around $25,000, making it unattainable for most families. Many couples require multiple rounds of IVF for a successful pregnancy. The Trump administration notes that only 30 percent of families have access to some form of employer-based coverage for the procedure.
In 2023, about 432,000 IVF cycles were conducted in the US, resulting in 91,771 babies. The announcement was made today from the Oval Office, with the president flanked by his Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Junior, the head of the FDA Dr Marty Makary, the head of Medicare and Medicaid Services Dr Mehmet Oz, and others involved in the effort to cut the cost of IVF.
Key Medications Affected
Among the drugs affected by this initiative is Gonal-f, a medication injected into women at the start of an IVF cycle to stimulate ovulation. EMD Serono produces the drug, which was initially priced at around $5,000 to $6,000 per dose. In comparison, the drug may be priced as low as $200 in Europe.
