Thomas Tuchel has expressed concerns about Cole Palmer’s injury issues, warning that they could affect his chances of being selected for the England squad if they qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions have maintained a perfect record in Group K, winning all five of their opening qualifying matches. Their next challenge is a trip to Latvia, where they will face the fourth-placed team.
With just two more wins needed to secure a spot in the tournament, Tuchel’s team is preparing for an intriguing friendly against Wales at Wembley. This match has generated interest, especially after Tuchel revealed his squad for the month’s double-header.
The selection raised eyebrows as several key players were left out, including Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish. Additionally, Palmer, who scored in the Euro 2024 final, was not included in the 24-man squad.
Palmer has struggled with a groin issue this season, limiting him to just three Premier League appearances. Although he was part of Tuchel’s first squad in March, he has only played once under the German manager, during a match against Andorra.
Tuchel commented on Palmer’s fitness, saying, “He was only in the June camp, that’s concerning, of course.” He emphasized the importance of Palmer playing without pain, as a chronic groin injury could be detrimental. Tuchel noted that when Palmer is fit, he can make a difference at both club and international levels.
Despite the challenges, there are hopes that Palmer could return to full fitness for Chelsea’s next match against Nottingham Forest on October 18. However, Tuchel remains skeptical about his availability for the game.
Tuchel addressed questions about his selection decisions, stating that the focus should be on building a strong team. He referenced a documentary about the New England Patriots, highlighting the importance of teamwork over individual talent.
He added, “There will always be discussions. It’s on you to ask the question why.” Tuchel acknowledged that while there may be angles to explore, the decisions are made for the benefit of the players in camp. He praised the team’s performance and the positive feedback from the last match.
