Catherine Connolly: A Journey of Resilience and Public Service

Catherine Connolly, a prominent figure in Irish politics, is one of the two remaining candidates vying for the presidency of Ireland. Her journey from a small town in Galway to the national stage is marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to public service.

Personal Life

Born and raised in Galway, Catherine is one of seven brothers and six sisters. Tragedy struck early in her life when her mother passed away when she was just nine years old. This left her father, a carpenter and shipbuilder, to raise the large family. Despite these challenges, Catherine found solace in education. She pursued a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Leeds in 1981. After completing her studies, she returned to Galway to earn a law degree from the University of Galway in 1989.

In 1991, she became a Barrister-at-Law and later transitioned into a career as a clinical psychologist. Her dual expertise in law and psychology has shaped her approach to public policy and advocacy.

Family Life

Now 68, Catherine has been married to her husband, Brian McEnery, for 33 years. The couple has maintained a relatively private relationship since their marriage in 1992. However, Brian has often been seen supporting Catherine during public events. They have two adult sons, though they prefer to keep their personal lives out of the public eye.

Catherine’s family has a long history of political involvement. Her sister, Collette, served as a Galway city councillor for 18 years before retiring in 2024. This legacy of public service has undoubtedly influenced Catherine’s own path.

Political Career

Catherine is a left-wing Independent TD with strong convictions on various issues. She is known for her firm stance on Irish neutrality, women’s rights, and the situation in Gaza, where she has described Israel as a ‘genocidal state’.

She was initially part of the Labour Party but left in 2006 after being denied the opportunity to run in the 2007 general election. Since then, she has served as an Independent TD for Galway West, elected in 2016. During her tenure, she has held several significant roles, including chair of the Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, and member of the Public Accounts Committee.

After being re-elected in 2020, Catherine made history as the first-ever female Leas Ceann Comhairle. She was also vocal in the lead-up to the 2018 abortion referendum, advocating for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment. She believes it is time to trust women to make their own decisions.

Catherine has garnered support from various political parties, including Sinn Féin, Labour, The Green Party, Social Democrats, People Before Profit, and several independent TDs and senators.

What Does Catherine Stand For?

Catherine aims to be “a president for all the people, especially for those often excluded and silenced.” According to her official website, she envisions a presidency that champions equality, justice, and the defense of neutrality as an active, living tradition of peace-making, bridge-building, and compassionate diplomacy.

Her campaign reflects a deep commitment to social justice and inclusivity. As the presidential election approaches, Catherine Connolly continues to inspire with her vision for a more equitable and peaceful Ireland.
