A woman was reported to have made a series of offensive remarks towards fellow passengers during a long-haul flight, according to court proceedings. Karen Baker, 59, reportedly consumed 15 cans of wine throughout the journey and became verbally aggressive towards others.
The incident occurred on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Miami to London Heathrow on February 9 this year. During the nine-hour flight, Baker reportedly turned around and shouted at other passengers, accusing them of kicking her seat. She also engaged in loud conversations with those seated nearby, speaking in a slurred manner.
When some passengers attempted to intervene, she allegedly responded with hostility, telling them: “I will be going back to my big house and you will be going back to your council houses.” In another instance, she directed a profane remark at a passenger who tried to quiet her down.
Baker’s partner, Steven White, tried to calm her down, but she reportedly got in his face and shouted, “What the f*** did you say?” She then proceeded to assault him by attempting to headbutt him and elbowing him several times before punching him. White raised his arms to protect himself and called for assistance from the cabin crew.
After the altercation, Baker moved to the back of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, where she was instructed by flight attendants to calm down. Despite this, she continued to shout at other passengers. When one passenger told her to shut up, she responded with another profanity.
She also targeted passenger Jodie Tristram, yelling, “You are a cocky b*. Look at that ugly b*, who does she think she is, Cruella de Ville?” The prosecutor noted that the other passengers were left terrified throughout the flight.
Upon landing, police were called. It was revealed that Baker had consumed 15 cans of wine during the flight. While she claimed the cans were meant for herself and her partner’s family, the cabin crew observed that she kept them for herself.
Baker, from Lincoln in the East Midlands, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court. She admitted to being drunk on an aircraft, racially aggravated harassment, and using threatening or abusive words to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. She denied the charge of assault by beating but was found guilty.
Sucheta Rose, representing Baker, requested a community order and stated that mitigation would be presented at a sentencing hearing at Isleworth Crown Court on November 12. Magistrate Rex Da Rocha released Baker on unconditional bail until 12 November.
