Young Photographer Champions Local Railway with Solo Exhibition
A 14-year-old photography enthusiast in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture is spearheading an initiative to preserve a cherished local train line through his artistic vision. Fuju Nagao, a second-year junior high school student, has organized his inaugural solo exhibition with the express aim of highlighting the unique appeal of the JR Koumi Line, which is currently grappling with significant financial challenges. His exhibition, hosted at the Izumi Onsen Health Center in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, seeks to draw attention to the region’s charm and potentially inspire adults to support the line’s revitalization.
The JR Koumi Line, a vital artery connecting Kobuchizawa Station in Hokuto with Komoro Station in Nagano Prefecture, holds the distinction of being the highest-altitude line within the Japan Railways (JR) group network. It gracefully winds its way through breathtaking mountainous terrain, reaching an impressive elevation of 1,375 meters. Along its route, travelers are treated to spectacular vistas of the majestic Yatsugatake mountains and the scientific marvel of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Nobeyama Radio Observatory. This observatory, located in Minamimaki village, Nagano Prefecture, even served as a picturesque backdrop for a recent installment of the popular “Detective Conan” anime film series, underscoring the line’s cultural relevance.
Despite its scenic beauty and cultural significance, the Koumi Line faces an uncertain future. A combination of declining local populations and reduced daily ridership has led to substantial financial deficits in certain sections of the line. Fuju, who proudly identifies as a “railway nerd for 12 years,” harbors a deep-seated concern about the potential closure of this beloved railway. This passion fuels his commitment to showcasing the line’s enduring appeal through his photography.
A Collection of Captivating Images
Fuju’s exhibition features approximately 30 carefully curated photographs, each designed to illustrate the profound connection between the Koumi Line and the communities it serves. His lens captures the essence of the railway as it navigates through the ever-changing tapestry of the seasons. Visitors can marvel at images of trains gliding past vibrant cherry blossoms in bloom, traversing serene snowy landscapes, and interacting with the daily lives of local residents.
The exhibition goes beyond mere scenic shots, delving into the human element of the railway. Fuju’s work includes poignant depictions of passengers patiently awaiting their train at the tranquil Saku-Hirose Station in Minamimaki, a photograph that garnered recognition by winning an award in a local contest. These images collectively paint a vivid picture of a railway that is not just a mode of transport but an integral part of the regional identity.
The Genesis of a Photographer’s Passion
Fuju’s lifelong fascination with trains began in his early childhood, sparked by the captivating world of model railroads. His journey into photography took a more serious turn in 2023, shortly after his family relocated from Yokohama to Hokuto. He participated in a photography workshop held at JR Kiyosato Station, an event that ignited his passion for capturing the world through his camera lens. Since then, Fuju has dedicated his holidays to documenting the picturesque scenery along the Koumi Line, armed with a sophisticated SLR camera. His efforts to promote the line have already seen him sell some of his photographs as postcards, a venture that encouraged him to pursue a solo exhibition.
Reflecting on his motivation, Fuju shared, “This year marks the 90th anniversary of the line’s full operation. I want to continue taking pictures (of the train line) so that not only tourists but also locals can appreciate its charm.” His dedication to preserving this vital piece of local heritage is a testament to his youthful idealism and his profound connection to his adopted home.
The exhibition is open to the public and runs until December 23rd. Admission is free, offering everyone an opportunity to experience the charm of the JR Koumi Line through the eyes of a dedicated young artist.
