Boston Marathon Champions Set Sights on Title Defence

The iconic streets of Boston are set to witness a thrilling spectacle next year as reigning champions Sharon Lokedi and John Korir have publicly declared their ambitious intentions to defend their hard-won titles at the 2026 Boston Marathon. Their resounding victories this past year have not only cemented their places in marathon history but have also ignited a fierce determination to return and repeat their triumphs on the challenging Massachusetts course.

Lokedi’s Record-Breaking Performance and Continued Dominance

Sharon Lokedi delivered a performance for the ages at the most recent Boston Marathon, shattering the course record with an astonishing time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds. Her breathtaking finish saw her outkick compatriot Hellen Obiri, who crossed the line in 2:17:41. Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw rounded out the podium with a time of 2:18:06.

This year’s victory represented a significant leap for Lokedi, who had finished second in the previous year’s race with a time of 2:22:45, trailing Obiri’s winning performance of 2:22:37. Lokedi herself highlighted the Boston triumph as a pivotal moment in her racing calendar.

“Boston in 2025 was beyond expectations,” Lokedi stated. “Breaking the course record, earning a victory, and racing against some of the best women in the world made 2025’s race a career highlight.”

Her dedication to maintaining peak performance is evident, as she has already commenced rigorous training with the singular goal of securing back-to-back Boston titles. “We’re already training hard to run it back in 2026,” she affirmed.

Lokedi’s stellar form extended beyond Boston throughout the 2025 season. Her impressive race calendar included:

  • June 7: A fifth-place finish at the New York 10K with a time of 31:13.
  • June 22: A commanding victory at the Boston 10K, clocking in at 31:39.
  • September 14: A strong second-place finish at the Copenhagen Half Marathon, recording 1:05:00, just behind Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw (1:04:44).
  • November 2: A runner-up position at the New York Marathon, finishing in 2:20:07, once again behind Hellen Obiri (2:19:51).

Korir’s Historic Win and Family Legacy

In the men’s division, John Korir emerged victorious, crossing the finish line in 2:04:45. He was closely followed by Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu and fellow Kenyan CyBrian Kotut, both finishing with identical times of 2:05:04.

Korir’s win etched his name into the annals of Boston Marathon history. He joined his brother, Wesley Korir, a previous champion in 2012, to become the first pair of siblings to conquer this prestigious race. The 29-year-old sprinter emphasized the profound significance of this achievement for his family.

“This year’s race was a very meaningful win for me and my family, and I look forward to coming back to Boston again,” Korir shared. His ambition for the upcoming marathon is clear: to defend his title with an equally powerful performance. “I aim to finish first and run fast again in April,” he declared.

Korir’s successful 2025 season was further highlighted by:

  • July 13: A victory at the Boilermaker 15K, with a time of 42:44.
  • October 12: An unfortunate DNF (Did Not Finish) at the Chicago Marathon, where he was aiming to defend his 2024 title.

However, Korir demonstrated remarkable resilience and an exceptional return to form at the end of the year. On December 7, he set a new personal best at the Valencia Marathon, achieving a blistering time of 2:02:24, a fitting conclusion to a season marked by both triumph and challenges. Both Lokedi and Korir’s commitments signal an eagerly anticipated return to Boston, promising another chapter of elite marathon running excellence.
