Historic Appointment Signals New Era for Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulation
The recent appointment of Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been met with widespread acclaim, particularly from the Women in Energy Network (WIEN). This leading advocacy group for gender balance in the energy sector views Eyesan’s ascension as a powerful testament to the Federal Government’s dedication to robust governance, inclusive leadership, and the cultivation of a more diverse executive talent pool.
In a formal statement extending congratulations, WIEN lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making what they describe as an “inspiring and historic” appointment. Mrs. Eyono Fatayi-Williams, President of WIEN, highlighted how this move directly aligns with the organization’s core mission: to champion female leadership and broaden opportunities for women throughout the entire energy value chain.
Fatayi-Williams emphasized that Eyesan’s appointment sends a strong signal of forward-thinking and inclusive leadership. She underscored that Eyesan’s extensive professional qualifications and proven track record make her exceptionally well-suited to navigate the complexities of the upstream petroleum regulatory landscape.
WIEN also pointed out the profound significance of this appointment, marking Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as the first woman in Nigeria’s history to lead the nation’s upstream petroleum regulatory body. This development is being celebrated as a monumental milestone for gender representation within the critical energy sector.
A Technocrat at the Helm: Driving Modernization and Efficiency
The selection of a technocrat with Eyesan’s caliber, according to Fatayi-Williams, clearly demonstrates a firm commitment to establishing a modern and resilient regulatory framework for the petroleum industry. WIEN has expressed unwavering confidence that Eyesan’s profound depth of experience will significantly bolster the government’s ongoing efforts to foster transparency, enhance efficiency, and achieve excellence in upstream petroleum regulation. The organization has pledged its continued support for women aspiring to leadership roles within the energy sector.
Echoing these sentiments, Engr. Asanimo Omezi, WIEN’s Executive Secretary, characterized the appointment as a substantial leap forward for gender inclusion and the development of future-ready leadership within Nigeria’s vital energy sector.
“Eyesan’s appointment is a clear commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive leadership structure,” Omezi stated. “We are proud of what this represents for women across the industry and remain committed to ensuring they have the support, visibility, and opportunities needed to rise.”
A Legacy of Expertise and Strategic Vision
Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan brings an impressive and extensive resume to her new role. An economics graduate from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), she boasts over three decades of invaluable experience garnered at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and its various subsidiaries.
Prior to her current appointment, Eyesan served as the Executive Vice President, Upstream, a position from which she provided critical strategic oversight for Nigeria’s entire upstream petroleum operations. She retired from this role in November 2024.
Her distinguished career has seen her hold a variety of key leadership positions, including roles such as Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer and Group General Manager of Corporate Planning and Strategy. In these capacities, she was instrumental in:
- Developing NNPC Limited’s Sustainability Framework: Spearheading initiatives to embed sustainable practices within the national oil company.
- Strengthening Financial Discipline: Implementing measures to enhance fiscal responsibility and accountability.
- Improving Cost Efficiency: Identifying and executing strategies to optimize operational expenditures.
- Guiding Mergers and Acquisitions Policy: Providing strategic direction for corporate growth and consolidation.
- Coordinating Long-Term Corporate Strategy: Developing and aligning strategic objectives with national goals.
- Managing Budgeting and Capital Allocation: Ensuring effective financial planning and resource distribution.
Furthermore, Eyesan played a pivotal role in liaising with government institutions on crucial matters such as capital budgets and national development plans, demonstrating her ability to bridge the gap between industry operations and national policy.
One of her most significant accomplishments includes leading the successful commercial dispute resolution of the Escravos Gas-to-Liquid (EGTL) project. This critical intervention resolved long-standing cost issues and ultimately secured substantial multi-million-dollar revenues for both NNPC and the Nigerian nation. Her proven ability to manage complex challenges and deliver tangible results positions her as a formidable leader for the NUPRC.
