Enterprise Cup: Blak Blad Gear Up for Tough Mwamba Encounter
The Enterprise Cup Round of 16 is set to deliver a thrilling encounter this Saturday as Blak Blad plays host to Mwamba at the Kenyatta University grounds. This fixture represents a significant clash between two teams with distinct ambitions and recent forms, promising a captivating display of rugby talent.
Blak Blad, currently positioned fifth in the Kenya Cup standings, has demonstrated a commendable performance this season. Their recent form includes a solid 21–10 victory over Nakuru, followed by an impressive 40–26 triumph against Quins. While they did suffer a setback against the formidable Strathmore Leos, the team has shown resilience and a capacity for strong performances.
Head coach Bernard Rotich is keen to conclude the current year on a high note. His primary objective is to secure a win against Mwamba, thereby building crucial momentum that will carry over into the league’s restart in January. Rotich anticipates a fiercely competitive match, acknowledging Mwamba’s current strength and their determined pursuit of a return to the top flight.
“It will be a tough test,” Rotich commented, reflecting on the upcoming challenge. “Mwamba are playing well, but at the same time, we are in good form with two wins on the bounce, and we are relishing the battle.”
The varsity side’s forward pack will be a key area of focus, with Rotich set to rely on the experience and power of Arthur Nyakundi, Moses Ayieko, Rodgers Akoth, and the inspirational captain Obak Kuke. In the backline, co-captain Benjamin Rugar, David Odhiambo, and Elvis Otete are expected to lead the charge, aiming to exploit any weaknesses in the opposition’s defence.
Mwamba, under the guidance of former Quins and Homeboyz tactician Paul Murunga, enters the match with a clear objective: to upset the odds and secure a coveted spot in the quarterfinals. Despite their relegation to the Championship, Mwamba has been a dominant force in that league, currently sitting second on the log. This strong performance positions them as strong contenders for promotion back to the Kenya Cup next season, and they will undoubtedly bring that championship mentality to this cup tie.
Murunga’s squad boasts a potent combination of experience and emerging talent. In the forwards, Ian Wamalwa is slated to spearhead the charge, supported by Brian Kahura, Aldrine Adanje, Kevin Juma, and Collins Odhiambo. The backline features the dynamic trio of Dennis Ndayala, Charles Kuka, and Eugene Ojiamabo, who are expected to be the key playmakers in what is anticipated to be a potent Kulabu backline.
The history between these two teams adds another layer of intrigue to the encounter. The last time Blak Blad and Mwamba locked horns was in March, with Mwamba emerging victorious in a hard-fought contest that ended 29–15. This previous result will undoubtedly serve as motivation for both sides, with Blak Blad seeking revenge and Mwamba aiming to reaffirm their superiority.
Paul Murunga expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the challenge. “We have had a good week of training, specifically looking at improvements in the scrum and lineout, sharpening the attack, and tweaking our attack plays,” he stated, highlighting the meticulous preparation undertaken by his squad.
Other Enterprise Cup Fixtures and Advancements
Beyond the headline clash between Blak Blad and Mwamba, the Enterprise Cup Round of 16 features several other compelling matchups. KCB is set to face off against Daystar Falcons, while the Strathmore Leos will go head-to-head with Zetech Oaks.
In a notable development, defending champions Kabras have already secured their passage to the quarterfinals. This advancement came about after Impala conceded a walkover, allowing Kabras to progress without a fight.
The quarterfinals will also see Oilers, Nondies, and Nakuru advancing. These teams have earned their spots after their respective opponents—MMUST, Kisumu, and South Coast Pirates—withdrew from the competition. The withdrawals were attributed to significant financial constraints, a challenge that continues to affect various sporting entities. This situation underscores the broader economic pressures facing clubs and highlights the resilience of those teams still competing in the Enterprise Cup. The remaining fixtures are expected to provide a high level of competition as teams vie for silverware and bragging rights in this prestigious tournament.
