From Silver Screen to Sporting Passion: A Conversation with Fatimah Gimsay
Fatimah Gimsay, the visionary filmmaker behind the internet-breaking 2025 hit ‘Laraba and Balarabe,’ recently sat down to discuss her creative journey, her deep-seated love for football, her advocacy for women’s sports, and the aspirations that drive her in the dynamic world of cinema. Her work, lauded for its compelling storytelling and resonant themes, has captured the attention of audiences worldwide, solidifying her position as a notable talent.
The Genesis of a Filmmaker
Gimsay’s entry into filmmaking was not a sudden whim but a gradual awakening. “I’ve always been captivated by the magic of filmmaking,” she shares. “I was endlessly curious about the intricate processes involved, the alchemy of bringing a story to life on screen. It was this persistent questioning that ultimately led me to realize that filmmaking was not just a passion, but a path I wanted to pursue full-time.”
The initial decision to embark on this unconventional career path was met with a mix of curiosity and support from her family. “I am incredibly grateful for my mother’s understanding,” Gimsay reflects. “While she didn’t fully grasp my sudden desire to become a filmmaker before graduating university, she generously provided me with the space to explore and discover. Thankfully, I took that leap, and it was unequivocally worth it.”
The Art of Creation: Embracing the Process
When asked about her favorite aspect of filmmaking, Gimsay’s response highlights a mature appreciation for the entire creative lifecycle. “Right now, I find joy in every single part,” she admits. “There were times in the past when I shied away from the more challenging elements. However, I’ve come to deeply appreciate and savor the entire process, from conception to the final product. It’s about embracing the journey as much as celebrating the destination.”
A Lifelong Love Affair with Football
Beyond the realm of cinema, Gimsay harbors a profound and enduring passion for sports, with football taking center stage. “My love for football ignited when I was just seven years old,” she reminisces. “My uncle, a staunch Chelsea supporter, introduced me to the sport. In a moment of affectionate betrayal, I declared myself an Arsenal fan. During my university years, I also had a fleeting interest in basketball. Despite the occasional stress it induces, I still find immense pleasure in watching a captivating football match.”
Her prowess on the field, however, didn’t match her enthusiasm. “Absolutely not,” she laughs when asked if she was a skilled player.
The allure of football, for Gimsay, lies in its narrative depth. “Football, to me, feels like a form of storytelling,” she explains. “It’s a sentiment that also drew me to professional wrestling at one point. Football is a beautiful game that orchestrates a symphony of emotions, taking you on an exhilarating rollercoaster. More than anything, it possesses an incredible power to unite people, transcending boundaries and divisions. I have cherished childhood memories intrinsically linked to countless unforgettable football moments.”
Her pantheon of sporting heroes is extensive and diverse: “Osaze Odemwingie, Leah Williamson, Megan Rapinoe, Thierry Henry, Rio Ferdinand, David Beckham – the list could go on and on.”
Her most cherished sporting memory is a deeply personal one, intertwined with global events. “This is a difficult question to answer,” she muses. “I vividly recall the first time I truly understood the significance of the World Cup. It was in 2002, held in Japan, and I believe Brazil emerged victorious. I was absolutely thrilled to grasp the concept of nations competing against each other on such a grand stage. Another powerful memory is Nigeria winning the AFCON in 2013, a moment I experienced while I was still in school.”
Championing Women in Sports
Gimsay is a vocal advocate for the recognition and support of women’s sports. “I absolutely celebrate the achievements of the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress!” she exclaims. “My only wish is that more people would actively show up and lend their support. There is no valid excuse for not watching women’s sports; you are missing out on an incredible spectacle. I am immensely proud of our female athletes; they are excelling and making their mark across all sporting disciplines.”
The Genesis of ‘Laraba and Balarabe’
The creation of her breakout film, ‘Laraba and Balarabe,’ stemmed from a desire to craft a narrative with significant emotional impact, despite resource constraints. “After completing ‘lowkey adults,’ Susan Pwajok and I felt a strong urge to create something new,” Gimsay explains. “We understood that securing substantial funding for a larger project was a significant hurdle. Therefore, we decided to focus on telling a smaller, more intimate story that, nonetheless, possessed a profound and expansive emotional core.”
The overwhelming reception to ‘Laraba and Balarabe’ caught her by surprise. “Not entirely,” she admits when asked about her expectations. “We were confident that the story would resonate with people, but the sheer volume and intensity of the reactions we received were beyond our wildest expectations. It was simultaneously jarring and incredibly exciting. That feeling continues to this day.”
The film’s narrative centers on a poignant theme: “It’s fundamentally a story about a young woman’s realization that she has been navigating a relationship entirely on her own,” Gimsay elaborates. “She experiences the five stages of grief within a condensed 30-minute timeframe. While it’s not a direct autobiographical account, I feel a deep connection to the characters and their emotional journeys.”
Cinematic Aspirations and Future Endeavors
Looking ahead, Gimsay has a clear vision for her future cinematic projects, with a particular interest in sports-themed narratives. “Oh, most definitely,” she affirms when asked about sports she’d like to explore on film. “Football, boxing, wrestling, and skating are all genres I am eager to delve into.”
When not immersed in the demanding world of filmmaking, Gimsay finds solace and rejuvenation in simple pleasures. “I cherish spending quality time with my loved ones, but I also deeply value my solitude,” she shares. “My relaxation rituals include watching a variety of content, scrolling through TikTok, visiting the beach, sharing meals with friends, exploring new hobbies, and simply trying to enjoy life’s moments.”
Her ultimate ambition in filmmaking is ambitious yet grounded. “That’s a monumental question,” she acknowledges. “My primary goal is to secure the necessary funding to bring important stories to life. The most formidable challenge in filmmaking is undeniably acquiring the financial resources to tell these compelling narratives. Currently, Double C Media is strategically focused on raising funds for a slate of stories that center on young adults and their vibrant, multifaceted worlds.”
Growth and Collaboration in the Nigerian Film Industry
Gimsay believes the Nigerian film industry is on a continuous path of evolution. “It’s an unending learning process, and I sincerely hope we embrace that mindset,” she states. “Furthermore, collaboration will invariably be our greatest asset and a key to our collective success.”
Finally, when pressed for her ultimate “GOATs” (Greatest Of All Time) in both filmmaking and sports, her choices reflect a deep appreciation for talent and impact: “For filmmaking, my GOATs are Ryan Coogler, Martin Scorsese, and David Fincher. In the realm of sports, I revere Serena Williams, Nwankwo Kanu, and Lionel Messi.”
