Kenyan Squad Eyes Olympic Dreams at African Youth Games

Kenya has officially announced its contingent of five talented young swimmers who will represent the nation at the upcoming African Youth Games, scheduled to commence this Saturday in Luanda, Angola. This prestigious multi-sport event serves as a crucial stepping stone, with athletes vying for a coveted spot in the 2025 Youth Olympic Games, slated to be held in Dakar, Senegal. The Kenyan team is poised to showcase its burgeoning talent and determination on the continental stage.

The five-member squad comprises a mix of seasoned national performers and emerging stars, each with specific strengths and event specializations. The team is led by Neo Olengo, who is set to compete in a demanding schedule. Olengo will test his mettle in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, the 50m breaststroke, the 100m freestyle, and the 200m medley. His consistent progress and impressive performances in domestic competitions have firmly established him as one of Kenya’s most promising young athletes in the breaststroke discipline.

Speaking from the host city of Luanda, team manager Grace King’ori expressed palpable enthusiasm and gratitude. She confirmed that the squad is in high spirits and deeply appreciative of the comprehensive sponsorship provided by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and the government. This support is instrumental in enabling the athletes to focus entirely on their performance and preparation.

The African Youth Games, a ten-day spectacle, will feature an impressive array of 33 disciplines. Beyond swimming, attendees can look forward to competitions in athletics, rowing, basketball, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, judo, karate-do, wrestling, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, skateboarding, and the dynamic discipline of breakdance. The Games will not be confined to Luanda alone, with events also being hosted in the cities of Benguela, Lubango, Huambo, Mocamedes, and Caxito, showcasing the breadth of sporting talent across Angola.
