Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent Republican congresswoman from Georgia, recently announced her decision to step down from Congress next year. Her resignation statement was a blistering critique of former ally Donald Trump, whom she now labels as ‘hateful’. This move marked a significant shift for a figure who once stood firmly in support of the former president.
Greene shared her decision through a lengthy social media post, where she recounted an emotional moment in her life. She revealed that she had left her father’s bedside during his cancer treatment to vote against the impeachment of Donald Trump in 2021. “I had to leave my mother’s side as my father had brain surgery to remove cancerous tumors in order to fly to Washington DC to defend President Trump and vote NO against the Democrat’s second impeachment in 2021,” she said.
Her father, Robert Greene, passed away later that year after a battle with melanoma. The loss deeply affected her, and she expressed her grief publicly, stating, “While I have endured the flaming arrows fired daily at me while I have been fighting against the left’s war on our freedom in Congress, my soul was torn apart watching my Daddy suffer and slowly die with cancer.”
This event underscored her previous loyalty to Trump, but over time, their relationship has soured. A key point of contention has been Greene’s calls to release the so-called Epstein files, which led to a rift between them. Since then, the two have had several public disagreements, culminating in Greene’s decision to step down from Congress.
The Impeachment Vote and Its Aftermath
In 2021, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ related to the January 6 insurrection. Greene was one of 197 Republicans who voted ‘no’ on the motion. Despite her efforts, the impeachment passed with 222 Democrats and ten Republicans voting in favor. However, the Senate later acquitted Trump, with votes of 57 to 43.
Trump became the first U.S. president to be impeached twice. Greene’s father passed away months later in April 2021, adding to the personal turmoil she faced during this period.

Greene’s departure from Congress comes amid heightened tensions with Trump. She cited constant death threats and personal attacks as reasons for her decision, which escalated after her public disagreement with the president over the Epstein files. However, not all reactions were positive. Far-right activist Laura Loomer criticized Greene, suggesting her resignation was motivated by financial gain. “MTG decided to resign on January 5th, 2026. Her federal pension kicks in on January 3, 2026,” Loomer posted, implying that Greene was seeking financial benefits.

In her final message, Greene called the current administration ‘hateful’ and predicted that her party would face challenges in the upcoming primaries. She reflected on her years of service, stating, “I have fought harder than almost any other elected Republican to elect Donald Trump and Republicans to power, traveling the country for years, spending millions of my own money.”
After her last day in office on January 5, Greene plans to focus on her family, making up for the lost time. Her journey from a staunch Trump supporter to a disillusioned politician highlights the complexities of political allegiance and personal sacrifice.
