Nigerian Boxers Triumph at Africa Youth Games, Clinching Olympic Berths
Nigerian boxing talent has shone brightly on the continental stage, with athletes securing two coveted gold medals and one bronze at the recent Africa Youth Games held in Angola. This impressive performance not only marks a significant achievement for the nation’s sporting prowess but also guarantees qualification for the two gold medallists to represent Nigeria at the prestigious Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
The nation’s first gold medal was clinched by Ayomide Mayowa in a closely contested 48kg final. Mayowa demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, ultimately defeating Algeria’s Bensallah Bouthenia via a split decision. Her victory set a strong precedent for the Nigerian contingent, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from the country.
Following closely, Abijuwon Farouq added a second gold medal to Nigeria’s tally in the 50kg category. Farouq was awarded the win by walkover after his opponent, Bofenda Mabela of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was found to be overweight, rendering him ineligible for the final bout. This decisive win underscores Farouq’s readiness and the unfortunate circumstances that prevented a direct contest.
Adding to the medal haul, Joshua Solomon earned a bronze medal in the 70kg division. While Solomon displayed commendable effort, he narrowly lost his semi-final bout to Angola’s Wisdom Pedro by a split decision. Despite not reaching the final, his bronze medal is a testament to his dedication and a promising indicator of future potential.
Path to the Youth Olympic Games
The significance of the gold medal victories cannot be overstated, as they confer automatic qualification for both Ayomide Mayowa and Abijuwon Farouq to compete for Nigeria at the Youth Olympic Games. This premier event is scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal, from October to November 2026, offering these young athletes a grand platform to showcase their skills on a global scale.
Federation Officials Hail Performance and Future Vision
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has expressed immense pride in the boxers’ achievements. Vivian Azimene, the secretary general of the NBF, who led the contingent to Angola, lauded the athletes for their unwavering grit and commitment throughout the competition.
“I am happy that the boxers were able to justify the trust and belief in the team by the NBF board, the National Sports Commission leadership, as well as that of the entire Nigerians,” Azimene stated. She further emphasized the positive implications of their success: “The performance of these young pugilists means one thing: that boxing in Nigeria has taken an upward trajectory.”
Echoing this sentiment, the vice president of the NBF, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, articulated the new board’s commitment to transforming the landscape of boxing within the country.
“I am excited to say that it’s a new dawn for boxing in Nigeria,” Imadu declared. “The performance of our boxers in Angola is only elementary to what we can achieve as a board. We already have a well-structured programme for the holistic development of the sport going forward, and this will take effect from the month of January 2026.”
Imadu, recognized for his pioneering role in initiating Africa’s first-ever amateur boxing league, also extended his gratitude to the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their crucial support and encouragement.
“It’s important that I also mention that the leadership of the NSC has been greatly supportive in all we have achieved in this very short period,” Imadu acknowledged. “With such collaboration and support from the apex sports governing body in the country, things can only get better in our sports.”
Grand Reception and Coaching Excellence
In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the victorious boxers were slated to be honored with a grand reception in Lagos on Monday, hosted by the Nigeria Boxing Federation. This event serves as a fitting tribute to their hard work and success.
The team’s impressive performance in Luanda was significantly influenced by the tactical expertise of their coach, Anthony Konyegwachie. His guidance and strategic acumen were instrumental in steering the young pugilists towards their commanding victories, highlighting the importance of experienced leadership in fostering athletic development.
