A New Era Dawns for Marketing in Nigeria: Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi Takes the Helm at NIMN

The Nigerian marketing landscape is buzzing with anticipation following the investiture of Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi as the first female president of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN). This landmark event in Lagos is being hailed as a pivotal moment, offering the institute a crucial opportunity to recalibrate, reconnect with industry stakeholders, and reignite a sense of optimism.

While past performance has been a subject of quiet speculation, with many hesitant to openly critique the institute’s recent trajectory, industry observers widely acknowledge that the preceding years presented significant challenges. The consensus among many is that the institute has navigated a “rough and tough” period.

Evidence supporting this view can be found in the fate of various reforms initiated during the tenure of the former President, Tony Agenmonmen. Initiatives aimed at professionalizing the marketing practice, such as efforts to curb the activities of unqualified practitioners and legal actions against executives operating without NIMN membership, appear to have lost momentum after the previous administration concluded its term. Similarly, the Marketing Tribunal, established to address infractions within the profession swiftly, seems to have become inactive since the departure of its champion. The number of cases prosecuted by the Tribunal, despite evident breaches in the industry, remains unclear.

Furthermore, capacity-building programmes that were a hallmark of that era reportedly saw a decline. One practitioner noted that the subsequent board “released its foot from the accelerator pedal,” suggesting a slowdown in proactive development.

Navigating Immediate Challenges and Future Aspirations

Dr. Bayo-Ajayi is acutely aware of the substantial responsibilities that lie ahead. One of her immediate priorities upon assuming office was securing new premises for the institute. She inherited a quit notice for the NIMN’s Ikeja GRA office, presenting a considerable hurdle for any new leader. However, she successfully navigated this challenge, securing a suitable and well-located office space within the metropolis before the deadline.

Many believe Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s swift success in this regard stems from her extensive experience within the institute. She confessed at her investiture that while she had been involved in various capacities over the years, leading the institute had not been her primary ambition. This deep understanding of NIMN’s operations is seen as a significant asset.

A Double Dose of Female Leadership and Industry Support

The appointment of Dr. Bayo-Ajayi is not only historic for being the first female president but also for the support she will receive from a secretariat led by another accomplished woman, Thelma Okoh, the institute’s Registrar. Ms. Okoh’s prior experience in other professional bodies is expected to be invaluable in her new role. This dynamic duo is seen by some as an opportunity for women in the industry to showcase their capabilities.

However, industry leaders emphasize that Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s leadership should be recognized for her merit, not solely her gender. Dr. Ike Neliaku, National President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), stated at the investiture that her election is a testament to her qualifications and the valuable contributions she is poised to make.

Ibukun Awosika, a prominent businesswoman, author, and the first female chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, congratulated Dr. Bayo-Ajayi, urging her to prioritize transparency and integrity in her duties. She highlighted that establishing a personal brand rooted in these values would significantly benefit the NIMN brand.

Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), also extended his congratulations and pledged ARCON’s support, particularly in the area of capacity building. He stressed the importance of collaboration between NIMN and ARCON to facilitate the agency’s ongoing reforms and advance the industry.

A Commitment to Ethical Marketing and Accountability

Stakeholders can find reassurance in Dr. Bayo-Ajayi’s commitment to elevating NIMN to a standard that will inspire pride. She declared, “We are at a point where we are ready to make our voice louder. Marketing will be built on code of conduct and ethics, where everyone will be made accountable.” This clear articulation of intent signals a new direction focused on professionalism, ethical conduct, and robust accountability within the Nigerian marketing sector. The industry eagerly awaits the tangible impact of this new leadership.
