Kuwinda 1 Shifts Focus to Abbas Khalif Super Cup Semifinal After Dramatic Quarterfinal Victory

Kuwinda 1 has fully redirected its attention to the upcoming semifinal clash against Step City in the Abbas Khalif Super Cup. The team secured their place in the final four following a nail-biting 2-1 triumph over Basel, a match marked by significant drama and tactical adjustments.

Head coach Paul Kimani acknowledged the intensity of the quarterfinal at the Nairobi West Prison Grounds, stating that the squad has already conducted a thorough debrief and moved past the chaotic events. He emphasized that the semifinal demands a higher level of decision-making and a more cohesive tactical structure.

“We have addressed what happened. We cannot repeat it,” Kimani stated. “The boys fought with heart, but discipline must match effort. Step City are organised, they transition well, and they won’t forgive mistakes. Our job now is to prepare properly and keep our composure.”

The initial breakthrough for Kuwinda 1 came from a well-executed play down the right flank. A swift move carved open the Basel defence, leading to a composed finish that settled early nerves.

However, the complexion of the match shifted rapidly. The scorer’s prolonged celebration resulted in a yellow card. Just five minutes later, a mistimed tackle led to a second yellow, reducing Kuwinda 1 to ten players. Basel capitalized on the ensuing free kick, equalizing the score.

The situation escalated further during the celebrations for Basel’s goal. A confrontation erupted on the field, prompting referee Ronald Kakai to issue a straight red card to a second Kuwinda 1 player. Finding themselves down to nine men before halftime, the Karen-based team was compelled to adopt a defensive strategy.

Despite facing a numerical disadvantage, Kuwinda 1’s defence held firm. Basel registered seven attempts within the penalty area during the second half but were consistently thwarted by a disciplined defensive unit, marshalled by centre-back Kevin “Kajo” Muasya.

The decisive moment of the match, however, belonged to the tournament’s leading scorer, John Wambua, who now boasts five goals in four appearances. As Basel committed more players forward in search of a late winner, Wambua reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and calmly slotted home the winning goal, securing what has been described as “the most improbable result of the tournament so far.”

The Kuwinda 1 bench erupted in celebration, fully aware that this hard-fought victory kept their aspirations alive for the coveted 33-seater matatu prize awaiting the champions.

Looking Ahead: The Challenge of Step City

The team’s focus now firmly rests on their semifinal encounter with Step City. Step City earned their place in the last four by defeating Kuwinda United 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in their quarterfinal match.

Kimani maintained a measured outlook regarding the upcoming challenge. “We’re one match from the final. The incentives are huge, but we must stay grounded. Step City are not here by accident. We’ll review their quarterfinal, tighten our organisation and compete with maturity,” he commented.

A Lucrative Prize Pool

This year’s Abbas Khalif Super Cup boasts an impressive prize package, generously sponsored by South C Ward MCA Abbas “Omondi” Khalif. The champions will be awarded a 33-seater matatu, while the runners-up will receive a 14-seater vehicle. The third-place team will be presented with a sedan.

The other semifinal will see Akiba face off against South C Rangers, setting the stage for further exciting competition in the tournament.
