Osun APC Primary to Feature Affirmation Vote for Candidate

The upcoming governorship primary election for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, scheduled for December 18th, will see the party’s candidate emerge through an affirmation process. This approach, confirmed by the Chairman of the primary election committee, Governor Monday Okpebholo, aims to foster unity and ensure a peaceful transition of power within the party.

Governor Okpebholo conveyed this information during a crucial meeting with APC stakeholders held in Osogbo, the state capital. The gathering served as a platform to brief party faithful on the impending primary and to solicit cooperation for a smooth and rancor-free electoral exercise. The committee’s arrival in Osun State was officially announced, setting the stage for the democratic process.

Key Figures and Aspirants

The meeting brought together a diverse group of party leaders and aspirants, including those who were disqualified from contesting. Notable attendees included:

  • Benedict Alabi: Former Deputy Governor of Osun State.
  • Timothy Owoeye: Former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.
  • Tajudeen Lawal: The current APC State Chairman.
  • Bola Oyebamiji: Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, identified as the leading aspirant.

Oyebamiji, alongside former Ifelodun State Constituency lawmaker Mulikat Abiola, had previously received clearance from the APC screening committee to participate in the primary. However, seven other aspirants, including former APC National Secretary Iyiola Omisore, were unfortunately disqualified during the initial screening at the party’s national headquarters.

The Affirmation Modality Explained

Governor Okpebholo elaborated on the chosen method for selecting the gubernatorial candidate. He emphasized that the primary would be conducted by consensus, with all 1,660 accredited delegates converging at a designated venue. These delegates will have the sole responsibility of affirming the choice of the party’s flagbearer for the next gubernatorial election.

“This gathering reflects our collective resolve, not only to strengthen internal democracy but to reclaim Osun State into the progressive fold and restore purposeful leadership,” Governor Okpebholo stated. He further elaborated on the transparency and fairness of the process, assuring all stakeholders that only properly accredited individuals would be granted entry to the venue. This measure is designed to guarantee accountability and uphold the integrity of the exercise.

Call for Unity and Cooperation

The chairman urged all party stakeholders, including leaders, aspirants, delegates, and general members, to lend their full support to the primary election committee. He stressed the importance of cooperating with the officials tasked with managing the election to ensure its success.

Echoing the sentiment of unity, the co-chairman of the primary committee, Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State, also addressed the Osun APC members. He implored them to set aside any internal differences and work collaboratively with the panel. This emphasis on reconciliation and collective effort underscores the party’s commitment to presenting a united front in the upcoming elections. The APC’s strategic move towards an affirmation vote signifies a deliberate effort to consolidate support and project an image of party cohesion as it prepares to contest the governorship.
