Makurdi Emerges as Tennis Hub with Historic National Open

Makurdi, the vibrant capital of Benue State, has cemented its place in Nigerian sporting lore following the resounding success of the inaugural Dr Joseph Ikyaator National Tennis Open. Organised by the dedicated Orseer Ikyaator Foundation, this tournament represents a watershed moment for Benue State, marking the first-ever nationally ranked tennis competition hosted within its borders. Beyond its historical significance, the event also distinguished itself as the highest-paying tennis tournament in Nigeria, setting a new standard for professional play and athlete remuneration.

The week-long spectacle drew an impressive contingent of 80 elite players from across the nation, all vying for crucial national ranking points. Complementing the professional circuit, 47 promising junior players showcased their burgeoning talents across 10 developmental categories. This convergence of talent transformed Makurdi into a pulsating epicentre of Nigerian tennis, buzzing with anticipation and fierce competition.

Champions Crowned and Talents Unveiled

The men’s singles final lived up to its billing, with Nigeria’s second-ranked player, Canice Abua, demonstrating his prowess. Abua triumphed over the seventh-ranked Mohammed Musa, a victory that underscored his consistent performance and cemented his status as a top contender.

While Musa narrowly missed out on the singles title, he made a significant comeback in the men’s doubles. Teaming up with Daniel Adeleye and Abubakar Yusuf, he secured the men’s doubles crown, with Abua and his partner, Mohammed Musa, finishing as commendable runners-up.

In the women’s singles, the dominance of Nigeria’s top-ranked female player, Khadijat Mohammed, was evident. She decisively defeated Nenrot Suwa to claim the coveted singles title. Mohammed’s impressive run continued as she completed a remarkable double, partnering with Mooffa Mary to clinch the women’s doubles final. Their formidable partnership proved too strong for the duo of Nenrot Suwa and Goodwin Favour.

The junior categories provided a compelling glimpse into the future of Nigerian tennis, with a host of young stars delivering standout performances. These emerging talents demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, signalling a bright future for the sport in the country. Among the notable champions were:

Orseer Ikyaator, the visionary founder and President of the Orseer Ikyaator Foundation, expressed his immense satisfaction with the tournament’s outcome during the closing ceremony. He highlighted the event as a monumental catalyst for tennis development not only within Benue State but also across Nigeria.

The foundation’s commitment to fostering sustainable sports development was evident in the substantial prize purse and dedicated scholarships. The tournament featured a generous N10 million prize purse for the professional players, reflecting the high stakes and competitive nature of the event. Furthermore, N5 million was allocated to scholarships specifically aimed at supporting junior and grassroots tennis programmes. This dual investment in elite competition and future talent underscores the foundation’s holistic approach to elevating the sport.

With the triumphant conclusion of the Ikyaator National Tennis Open, Makurdi has firmly etched its name onto Nigeria’s tennis map. The event has not only provided a platform for national-level competition but has also set a new benchmark for hosting high-profile sporting events in regions outside the traditional sporting hubs, promising a more inclusive and dynamic future for tennis in Nigeria.
