The event saw seasoned players Matthew Kuti and Sukurat Aiyelabegan reclaim their prestigious titles, having been narrowly defeated in the previous year. This year’s finals were a spectacle, drawing a significant crowd and distinguished guests, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission.

Matthew Kuti showcased a masterclass in table tennis, maintaining an impeccable record from the initial group stages all the way to the final. His journey culminated in a decisive 4-0 victory over Muiz Adegoke, securing him the coveted boys’ U-19 title. This triumph marks Kuti’s second win in this category over the last three editions of the tournament, underscoring his consistent prowess.

Equally impressive was Sukurat Aiyelabegan, who delivered a commanding performance to clinch the girls’ U-19 crown. She defeated Khadijat Okanlawon with a decisive 4-0 scoreline, mirroring Kuti’s dominance. This victory also represents Aiyelabegan’s second championship in three years, solidifying her position as a formidable force in the girls’ U-19 division.

Rising Stars and Emerging Talents Recognized

Beyond the headline victories, the tournament provided a platform for other talented athletes to shine and solidify their reputations:

  • Chinenye Okafor of Abia State successfully defended her girls’ U-15 title. Her exceptional performance throughout the tournament earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the female category, highlighting her all-around excellence.
  • Habeeb Adebayo was a standout performer in the boys’ categories. He not only secured the U-12 boys’ title but also garnered the MVP award for the male division, demonstrating his significant talent and potential.

  • In the boys’ U-15 singles, Joseph Marvelous of Kogi State displayed remarkable skill, defeating Umar Ayoola of Lagos 3-0 to claim the championship title.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the special guest of honour, lauded the tournament’s sponsor, Mr. Yemi Edun, for his unwavering commitment to identifying and nurturing grassroots talent. The Governor emphasized the critical importance of such initiatives for the advancement of sports in Nigeria.
